ATRCAA issues free farmers coupon booklets

The Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission Area Agency on Aging in conjunction with the State of Alabama Farmer’s Market Authority, will issue free Farmers Market Coupon Booklets valued at $28 in Clarke County. This program is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to provide fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for older adults throughout Clarke County. Distribution centers will be the Grove Hill Senior Center at Grove Hill Town Hall, 111 Church Street on Thursday, (today) June 12 at 12 p.m. Recipients must be age 60 or older and live in Clarke County and meet income guidelines as follows: $18,200 for a household of one ($1,517 monthly); $24,500 for a household of two, ($2,042 monthly); $30,800 for a household of three, ($2,567 monthly). AIDS Prevention Coalition meets

The Southwest Alabama AIDS Prevention Coalition will have its monthly meeting Friday, June 13 at 11 a.m. until 12 noon in the Monroe County Health Department in Monroeville. Contact Maureen Nichols at 251-275-7108 for more information.

VFW flag retirement

VFW Post 5106 and its ladies auxiliary will have a flag retirement ceremony at the Post on 555 Old Highway 5 South Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m. The boy scouts and girl scouts will be assisting in the retirement. Anyone who has a torn or tatted flag may bring them for proper retirement or leave them in the flag drop.

EMA classes The American Red Cross and Clarke County Emergency Management will conduct two classes Saturday, June 14 at Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville. “Shelter Operations” will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m., and “Mass Care Operations” will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. There is no charge for these classes. SWAIA to meet at Steakhouse

Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will hold its monthly meeting and community information forum Tuesday, June 17 at 7 p.m. at the Jackson Steakhouse Restaurant. Survivor of Bataan Death March to speak

Col. Glenn Frazier, a survivor of the Bataan Death March during World War II, will speak during a patriotic ceremony at 7 p.m. on June 21 at Pineview Baptist Church in Thomasville. He was also featured in the recent PBS mini-series, “The War.” Frazier will also speak at the morning worship service June 22. For more information, call the church at 1-334-636- 2405.

Deas family reunion set

There will be a reunion of all descendants of Alonzo and Walter Deas on Saturday, June 21 in Jackson. Activities will begin at 10 a.m. at the VFW on Club Wiley Road, the first road on the left after crossing the Tombigbee River when traveling north on U.S. 43. SWAMC accepting applications for scholarships

The Southwest Alabama Medical Center Auxiliary has scholarships available for students who have been accepted in a healthcare field at an approved educational facility. Applications may be obtained from your school, or if not available, contact SWAMC Auxiliary Scholarship Committee, 1015 Tess Drive, Thomasville, AL 36784. Applications must be received no later than June 30.

Chatom Fourth of July

The Town of Chatom will present its Fourth of July celebration at the Chatom Community Center on Friday, July 4 with fun, food, friends and fireworks starting at 5 p.m. Admission is free. Parking transportation will be provided. Featured this year will be DK BMX Bicycle Stunt Show, mechanical bull, The Colgate Country Showdown, antique cars, Marcus and Ebony (live band), Miss Red White and Blue Pageant at 2 p.m., Bubbles and Yo Yo the Clowns, a “giant” slide, bouncies, water slides and food booths. Second Coffeeville Musical Festival set

The Second Coffeeville Musical Festival will be Saturday, July 5 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Dr. Edwina Hart’s residence located at 21370 Highway 69 South. The festival will feature gospel talents such as the Mt. Zion #2 Praise Team, The Land Boys of Millry, Taylor Sisters, Megal Brooks and Mr. Mazingo and Bluegrass Friends and other talents. Blues begins at 6 p.m. until featuring Doktu Rhute Muuzic – formerly Roy Hytower and Steve Perry of Selma. There will be food vendors on site and arts and craft booths available. Animal care group meets

The Clarke County Animal Care and Control Facility Study Group will be holding a public meeting Thursday, July 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Courtroom. The purpose of this meeting is to get the public’s input on the feasibility and need of a county wide animal care and control operation. Everyone is invited to share their questions and concerns.

Free reading program in July

Join “Catch the Reading Bug” this summer at the Grove Hill Public Library and discover the amazing world of insects. The 2008 Summer Reading Program is open to children, Kindergarten – 6th Grade. the program will be held each Wednesday morning in July at the library. Kindergarten-3rd Grade will meet from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and 4th-6th Grades will meet from 11 until 12 p.m. go by the library now to register and get your library card. GHBC Living Proof Live 2008

Grove Hill Baptist Church will sponsor its Living Proof Live 2008 Simulcast featuring internationally acclaimed Bible teacher Beth Moore live via satellite with worship leader Travis Cottrell. The simulcast will begin Friday, Aug. 1 from 5:30 until 6:15 p.m. with supper and the conference will begin at 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 2 breakfast will be held from 7:30 until 8:15 a.m. and the conference will begin at 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. Tickets are $35 and that includes the conference, meals and child care. SWAIA roasts commissioners

The Southwest Alabama Improvement Association (SWAIA) will sponsor an event of fun and enlightenment, “A Roast of Clarke County Commissioners,” Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. with a reception and program at 7 p.m. at the H.W. Pearce Jr. Memorial Park Assembly House in downtown Jackson. Admission to this event is $10 per person. The invited guests are Honorable Sam Jones, Mayor, City of Mobile, Toastmaster, U.S. Representative (s) Jo Bonner and Artur Davis. The color guards services will be performed by the Army JROTC Southern Choctaw High School Unit under the direction of First Sgt. Houston Cunningham.
