Dixie Youth’s Opening Day is Saturday

Grove Hill’s Dixie Youth league’s Opening Day will be this Saturday with opening ceremonies beginning at 9 a.m. on the softball side.

The teams with players and coaches will be introduced.

There will be a field dedication ceremony that will coincide with the annual J.R. Kelley Award presentation.

“We are very excited about the season starting,” President Robby Kolb said. “We have 22 teams across baseball and softball and they are ready to get started.”

This year the Grove Hill leagues will have some changes with the 11-12-year-old baseball will now be playing under Ozone rules. Under the new format the playing field is larger, pitchers will have new rules as will the base runners.

“This is something everyone in the state has done and hopefully it will help the players when they make the jump to the older age groups,” Kolb said.

Also new will be more concise and structured rules for T-ball and the newly formed Sweeties (Tball set up for the girls). Teams will bat 10 players in an inning or until three outs are made.

“The changes are strictly to try and get these players ready for the next age group,” he added.

A lot of work has been done at Hudson Park during the off-season.

“We want to thank all of the many volunteers who have worked on the fields and the town for all of the hard work they have done,” Kolb said. “Also thanks to the Clarke County Park and Recreation Board for working with us with a grant.”
