Spencer Walker’s first day out of office as District Attorney of the First Judicial Circuit was spent in a hearing before the Alabama Ethics Commission in Montgomery. The hearing was in executive session, closed to the public.

The commission voted three to two to send one complaint lodged against Walker to the Alabama Attorney General’s Office for review. Other complaints were dismissed.

Walker had planned to step down for a long time on Oct. 31, the date he was eligible to retire. He was first elected in 2004 and took office in

2005.

Walker’s attorney, George L. Beck Jr., offered the following statement Tuesday:

“Mr. Walker is the victim of a vicious, unfounded attack by his former wife. She has not only campaigned on social media in violation of the Ethic’s secrecy laws, but she has flaunted the law in an effort to intimidate and harass Mr. Walker’s wife, Lara. The only alleged misuse of a vehicle was the result of a misunderstanding between his former wife and Mr. Walker that Mr. Walker offered to repay. The Ethics Commission failed to follow its own laws and regulations mandated by the legislature and engaged in a ‘bait and switch’ on one of the more important issues in the allegations. I feel confident that Mr. Walker will ultimately be exonerated.”

Walker’s ex-wife, Jodi Burnett, is now remarried. His wife, Lara Walker, is a former assistant DA. Burnett alleged a number of improprieties that she submitted to the Ethics Commission.

The First Judicial Circuit is composed of Choctaw, Clarke and Washington counties.

This article has been updated to reflect that only one complaint was forwarded to the AG’s office and to correct the spelling of Jodi Burnett’s first name.
