Four former Coffeeville High School students and players of James L. Kornegay, better known as “Coach”, visited Mr. and Mrs. Kornegay at their home in Cheslea, Ala. on June 28. Three of the students were members of the undefeated CHS football team of 1955. The group consisted of R. L. Guy, who was selected on the “All State” team that year, Leroy Bedwell, William Harper and Jimmy Deas. The school year 1955-56 was the last year Coach Kornegay coached. He was named principal the following year and was principal for several years before leaving Coffeeville in the early 1960s. He went on to serve as superintendent of education in Bibb County. The people of Coffeeville continue to hold the Kornegay family in high esteem because they played such an important roll in the lives of so many during the years they lived there, William Harper said. “When the Senior Class of 1957 went on a trip to Washington D.C. in the spring of their Senior year, Mrs. Kornegay was one of the sponsors, assigned to keep the seniors out of trouble. However, in many of the places we visited, the tour guides assumed Mrs. Sara was one of the students because she looked as young as the class members,” he said.
