Edward L. Gilchrist, 81, of Birmingham died May 20, 2011.
He was born July 31, 1929 in Grove Hill. He was a member of Brookwood Baptist Church and Riley Brice Sunday School Class. He was a kind and gentle man, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will truly be missed by all. He attended Clarke County High School and Draughon’s Business College. He joined the United States Navy and served in the U.S.S. Antietam and the U.S.S. Essex during the Korean War. He retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company. During his retirement years, he stayed busy working with Industrial Health Council and Belk Department Store.
Survivors include his son, Ron (Melanie) Gilchrist; a daughter, Cindy Gilchrist Coulter; one brother, Branton Gilchrist; two sisters, Mildred Paul, Betty Starlin; a special sister-in-law, Margaret Stotts; three grandchildren, Patrick Gilchrist, Cammie Coulter, Lakin Coulter, a special niece, Pam Winks and a host of other nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Miles Gilchrist; his father, Joseph Cullen Gilchrist; and his mother, Lilly Dell Duke Gilchrist.
The service was May 23 at 11 a.m. at Brookwood Baptist Church in Birmingham.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the local chapters of the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association.
