The Grove Hill Town Council adopted an ordinance Monday to buy property adjacent to Town Hall on Church Street for $225,000.

The property, known as the Louis Stringer home and property, belongs to Pat Williams. It includes a vacant lot next to the TDS telephone office and extends eastward the length of the adjacent town property to Crawford Street.

“I think it is an opportunity we should take advantage of,” said Mayor Jerry Newton. “We have the money on hand to pay for it.”

Newton continued, “We do not have room in town hall anymore; there are offices in closets.” More storage space is needed, he added.

Newton said it is likely that the police department offices would be located in the Stringer house; perhaps others.

Citizen Gina Skipper said, “It is a cute little house; it is hard to imagine it looking like a police station.”

“Well,” responded Newton, “we’ll put a sign out front.”

There was little comment or discussion from the other council members as they voted for the ordinance. Council member Levon Hicks did say he thought it was a good move.

Back in February, Mayor Newton had advocated buying the old Medicine Chest pharmacy building to be a new town hall for $219,000 but was shot down by the town council.

This buy was deemed better since the property joins the town property and the Stringer house is just across the fire department’s drive from town hall.
