There was little surprise in the two races for Clarke County sheriff. Incumbent Sheriff DeWayne Smith easily won the Republican nomination in Tuesday’s voting while Michael Hunt won the Democratic nomination. The two will compete for the office in the Nov. 8 General Election.

Smith polled 3,629 votes, or 88.15%, to challenger James “Rick” Jones’ 488, or 11.85%.

Hunt received 1,694 votes, or 79.53%, to Robert Barren’s 436, or 20.47%.

Calvin Tate submitted a petition to be an independent candidate in the Nov. 8 General Election. His petition had not been completely verified at press time to see if it meets all the legal requirements.

Smith was working for the Jackson Police Department when he was tapped by Gov. Kay Ivey to be sheriff after incumbent Ray Norris resigned in the summer of 2021. Hunt is a retired Jackson Police officer.
