The Jackson Academy Eagles defeated the Monroe Academy Vols 31-6 on the road Friday, Aug. 18 to open the 2023 AISA Football Season.

The Eagles were led to victory by Quarterback Huntley Dees with 306 yards passing on 27 attempts, 16 completions for four touchdowns. He had no interceptions. Wide Receiver Chuck Richardson caught eight passes for 146 yards, two touchdowns and had two interceptions. Wide Receiver Hunter Hillman caught four passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Richardson, Hillman and Dees all caught two-point conversion passes for two-points. Kris Harrell kicked a PAT.

Veteran Coach Danny Powell got his first win being back with the Eagles

This is the first time that Coach Powell got a win in his first game as a AISA head coach.

Powell said, “It is always good to get a win and I thought our kids played really hard. Monroe was a lot bigger than us and they probably won in the trenches and Dees did a great job throwing the ball and Chuck Richardson did a great job catching the ball and Hillman made some catches. The second half I am not saying we were trying to score, but we were trying to use a little more clock.”

Defensive Coordinator Devin Roberts said, “I was proud of them playing tough against a team like that and they are going to get some first downs, but you got to keep grinding until you get the big play in the backfield and get them behind the chains and we did a good job adjusting on the fly and got in the correct gaps.”

Powell added, “This is Hillman’s first varsity start and we had three offensive linemen that got their first varsity start and they are Drayton Kelly, Micah Anderson and Daniel Crager. Anderson has never been a lineman before this year.”

JA scored first on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Dees to Richardson and Dees caught a pass from Hillman for the twopoint conversion to give the Eagles a 8-0 lead with seven minutes to play in the first quarter.

Richardson intercepted a Monroe pass in the end zone with 1:48 to play in the first quarter to end a Monroe drive.

The first quarter ended with the Eagles leading 8-0.

The Eagles scored to start the second quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Dees to Richardson. Harrell kicked the extra point to give JA a 15-0 lead with 11:53 to play in the second quarter.

Monroe Academy scored a touchdown on a 35-yard run to the end zone with 6:56 to play in the second quarter. The PAT was no good and the Eagles led 15-6.

JA would score once again in the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Dees to Hillman and Dees hit Hillman for the two-point play to give the Eagles a 23- 6 lead.

The Eagles scored one last time on a 20- yard touchdown pass from Dees to Hillman and Richardson caught the two-point pass from Dees to give Eagles a 31-6 lead at halftime.

Neither team was able to score in the second half and the Eagles won 31-6.

Eagle Zander Jordan caught three passes for 46 yards, Caine Richardson caught one pass for 18 yards and rushed three times for 10 yards and Jacob Criswell had five and a half tackles. T.R. Hodge had four and a half tackles.
