New polling numbers released last week show Katie Britt well ahead of her two closest Republican challenges in the race for an Alabama seat in the U.S. Senate.

The race to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Shelby has been heavily contested with Britt, a former chief of staff to Shelby and former CEO of the Business Council of Alabama, Congressman Mo Brooks and Michael Durant, a businessman and veteran, the top three of six candidates.

Britt has big lead in polls

The poll from the Alabama Daily News and Gray Television puts Britt at 32%, Brooks at 22.5% and Durant at 21.4%.

That is a sharp reversal from March when the same polling company showed Durant leading with 34.6%, Britt in second place and Brooks in third with 16.1%.

Brooks supported President Donald Trump’s efforts to reverse the 2021 election results and made a fiery speech on Jan. 6, 2022 inciting attackers on the U.S. Capitol as the Congress was doing the ritual of the final vote tally. He received Trump’s endorsement for the Senate but Trump took that away after Congress certified Joseph Biden as the new president and said the election was over and the country should move forward.

Trump had promised to endorse another candidate but so far has not.

Britt says she is a conservative and the best person to get things done in Washington. Her campaign website says she is an “advocate for smaller government, modern job growth, constitutional liberties and greater opportunity.”

Durant served in the U.S. Army for 22 years before founding an engineering firm. He was a pilot of a helicopter shot down in Somalia in 1993 and was briefly held prisoner.

All of the top three claim to be Trump supporters and advocates of many of his policies.

Britt and Brooks are native Alabamians. Durant was born in New Hampshire. He also has homes elsewhere and some have questioned his loyalty to the state.

The other three candidates in the race are Lillie Boddie, Karla M. DuPriest and Jake Schafer.
