Work is progressing on putting down a natural gas pipeline to serve PowerSouth’s new Lowman Electric Plant at Leroy that is nearing completion. The old plant used coal to generate electricity but it is being replaced with a natural gas-fed plant. The gas had to come from somewhere and a large line that crosses central Choctaw County was tapped and a 51-mile line from it will feed the new plant. The pipe is 16 inches in diameter and will be buried in the center of a wide right-of-way easement. The line skirts to the north of Frankville and north of St. Stephens. This photo was taken from the Cement Plant Road near St. Stephens. The line runs just to the north of the Leroy-St. Stephens highway and into Leroy. It will cross under Highway 43 and continue to the plant. Several hundred people are working on the pipeline that should be completed sometime this summer.
