Johnnie Fletcher Tharp Sr., 87, of Washington County died Aug. 27, 2008 at a local nursing facility after a brief illness of Acute Leukemia and

Pneumonia.

He was born

Sept. 21, 1920 in

Grove Hill. He was a devoted Christian husband, father and grandfather. He was a member and deacon of the Liberty Baptist Church. He was a member of the Alabama Peace Officers Association.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a retired Chief of Security at Searcy Hospital in Mt. Vernon for 45 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie T. (Steven) Grimes, Chatom, Bonnie A. (Laverne) Baxter, Gulf Shores; one sister, Lena Ellen Davis, Sieverville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Jason N. (Glenda) Grimes, Henderson, NV, Samantha G. (Tony) Sanks, Brewton, Diana G. (Will) Colvin, Waynesboro, Miss., Christopher R. Baxter, Colby R. Baxter, Gulf Shores; two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Annie Laura Young Tharp and a son, Johnnie Fletcher Tharp Jr.

The service was Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church in Fairford. Burial was in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery. Lathan Funeral Home of Chatom directed.
