Tropical storm could be headed to Gulf Coast

Forecasters said it was going to be a busy hurricane season. They may be right.

Already there have been two named depressions and Tuesday the earliest named storm on record — Tropical Storm Cristobal — formed in the lower Gulf of Mexico off the Mexican coast.

It is expected to head north and the forecast models have it all over the board — anywhere from the Florida Panhandle to Texas.

Right now, it is expected to be a rainmaker, impacting east Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Landfall isn’t expected until the weekend or early next week.

The storm started out in the Eastern Pacific as Tropical Storm Amanda, the first named storm of the Pacific season. It crossed Guatemala, killing at least 14 people and dissolved but then regrouped and strengthened to become a tropical depression and then a tropical storm.

People should keep an eye on this storm. Pay attention to local weather programs and check the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency Facebook page for more information.
