Purple martins spotted first in Chance



Sammy Hutto reported purple martins at his home in the Chance community Monday, Feb. 2 at 4:30 p.m. Hutto spied the first martins of 2007 on Jan. 29 last year. Purple martins are eagerly awaited by outdoor lovers each year as a sign of the coming spring. The Democrat annually makes the first sightings a front page affair.

Suspect arrested for stealing firefighter equipment
